The best outcome is often both: build the prototype with AI in an evening, then hire against a working prototype instead of a document.

When to hire

  • The app is the backend. Marketplaces, social networks, anything with payouts, real-time features or heavy data.
  • Regulated data. Health records, finance, children's accounts — you want a professional responsible for compliance.
  • Exact design. A brand with a design system and a designer checking every screen.
  • Scale from day one. Tens of thousands of users on launch day.

When not to

If your app is a menu, a catalogue, a booking form, a tracker, a quiz, a portfolio, an event guide or a community notice board, a developer is expensive overkill. These are exactly the apps an AI builder produces in one sitting, and the use cases show each one with a prompt.

The hybrid that saves the most money
